Prompt: All of Them

Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life.

I had a personal awakening when I turned 40 and realized my life was in all likelihood more than half over. That was the beginning of a long string of lessons I wish I had learned earlier. I describe the learning process as being like “falling down the stairs and hitting my head on every single step.”

Let me summarize a few of the big ones:

I internalized a lot of what people said about me as a child that was not true. I am not the person I was told I was.

Therapy and meds are fantastic if you want to actually accomplish something in your life. My dad says he doesn’t believe in meds because then “you aren’t your real self.” Well, I know my so-called “real self” and she sucks.

It’s okay to have nice things without feeling guilty. I do deserve the things I have worked hard for.

Radical acceptance. Learn it and do it. Fighting reality is just going to wear you out.

And so many others. Hard lessons, largely, but if I had really known and understood earlier, I could have avoided some trouble.
