Threads: wishbonewords

If I had to pick a single word to describe my pain, it would be “relentless.” Even when I am as comfortable as I can possibly be, there’s at least a dull ache or throbbing twinge somewhere in my body. But that’s my normal baseline, so when I tell people that I am hitting 7, 8, or 9 on the pain scale, I don’t think they understand that my 1 is probably their 3, based on my own pre-disability experience of my own body.

Even if I could formulate the words to explain all the various pain states I go through in a day, I could never give a proper description of the cumulative effect. Pain is more than hurting. Being in pain is exhausting. It’s distracting. On a bad day, it can drown out everything else going on around me. Even at the end of a good day, it can be hard not to take it personally, as if the universe had it in for me all along.
