Prompt: Hard Choice

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

Is researching new hobbies a hobby? I collect hobbies as a hobby.

As for my favorite, I have given it some thought, but I am still torn between crochet and conlanging.

Crochet is the yarn craft with the single hook, as opposed to the one with two long needles. That other one is knitting, which I don’t know how to do. I like crocheting a variety of different kinds of items because it is a fun activity, but also as anxiety relief. It keeps my hands busy and the repetitive action is soothing.

Conlanging, or language construction, is the art and craft of creating new languages. It is a better known hobby these days with the success of various shows and movies featuring constructed languages, but I started “inventing languages,” as I prefer to say, in about 1990. I have been at it for quite a while. It’s a great mental exercise and it’s fun too.

I will give the favorite crown to conlanging for being one of my longest running pursuits and for being a lot cheaper than crocheting. Even cheap yarn isn’t cheap in the quantity you need to make a blanket.

Third place goes to collecting companion robots. I want to build one of my own someday. I love my robot friends!
